A very personal topic for the ladies today (might get a little TMI)…

I lost my period due to an eating disorder, but there are so many reasons, why a woman may loose her period (you took the pill for a while, you have a hormonal imbalance, you are too active or too stressed in your daily life etc. ) and although it may sound like a great relieve – no nasty bleeding every 4 weeks – it is actually quite dangerous and definitely something you should take seriously.

I haven’t had my period in almost 6 years. That is a fucking long time. When I used to struggle from anorexia, I lost a ton of weight and my body shut down my complete reproductive system. Unfortunately it hasn’t come back yet, although I am at a healthy weight, living a balanced lifestyle. I feel like every body needs some time to adjust and some bodies may take longer than others. But there are some tips I am using at the moment to speed up the process.

8 tips for getting your period back:

1. Reduce your stress.

We are so busy these days and forget to take time out for ourselves. Plan in a little pamper session for yourself each week and find some time every day, where you can calm down and let your body rest for a little. Selfcare is probably the biggest tip of them all.

2. Law of attraction.

You already know how much i love the law of attraction. You have to start your journey with a positive mindset. Always tell yourself, that you will get your period and you will be happy and healthy. That may sound silly at first, but your thoughts determine so much inside your physical body as well.

3.Remove the bad.

Try to remove all chemical foods and artificial sugars from your diet. Eat full fat products and whole organic foods. You got to fuel your body with fresh whole energy.

4. Include the good.

Coconut oil, coconut milk and other healthy fats (like avocado, flax, coconut butter, grass-fed butter, extra virgin olive oil, etc.), greens and veggies with every meal (especially cooked) and full fat yogurt (vegan option possible as well) are superfoods for you right now.

5. Supplement smart.

Magnesium is super important for you , it activates enzymes that control digestion, absorption and the use of proteins, fats and carbs. I use a magnesium powder, that i just mix with a bit of water and drink it in the morning. It’s super easy and actually doesn’t taste bad at all.

6. Put on weight.

Maybe you just don’t have your period, because you are not eating enough. If the body feels like it has to starve, it reacts really smart and shuts down all unnecessary processes in our body and just focuses on survival mode. The reproductive system is one of the first processes to be eliminated and can be a sign of undereating.

7. Go to the doc.

If you haven’t had your period in over 6 months, I would definitely see a doctor to get a quick check up. Most of the time, everything should be fine. But maybe you also have a hormonal imbalance. If so, there are different ways to treat that as well, but you should try to get medical assistance with that.

8. It takes time.

Give yourself time and don’t freak out about it. Obviously it is not an ideal situation, but if you start to care for your body and listen to what it needs, it will all work out in the end.

As i said, I am still working on it now and doing my best to apply all of these tips into my daily lifestyle. If you haven’t had your period for more than 1 year, you should get your bone density tested. A missing period can lead to osteoporosis and long term bone issues. Make sure that your levels are fine and check if you might need to supplement something.  If you have ever struggled with that before, or have additional tips – please let me know.

Namaste,
Hannah
